+VENOVO is a extraordinary kitchen model that now definitively eliminates the boundary between kitchen and living. Supported by two streamlined frames floating around the carcass. An invisible carrying frame makes a prop in the middle area completely unnecessary. This is how the +VENOVO floating effect comes into being.

Passion for Innovation

At the end of the 1960s, Poggenpohl is on the search for new ways of living and cooking. Award-winning designer Luigi Colani finds them with the study experiment 70, a look to the year 2000. The spectacular model picks up on the utopia of life in outer space and is part of a floating house on stilts featuring several docked spheres. In the kitchen capsule, all the working steps can be efficiently performed from a centrally positioned chair. The cupboards and kitchen appliances are just an arm’s length away. Instead of elaborate cooking procedures, the design is made for quickly heating convenience foods and automatically transporting them to the dining room.    Poggenpohl presents the study at the furniture trade fair in 1970 in Cologne. The swivel chair was designed by the seating furniture specialist Cor, the appliance by AEG. The outer space blue of the sphere’s exterior was developed by Poggenpohl specifically for this model.

The Art in Artisanship

Wood, stone, glass and metal are natural materials which Poggenpohl has continuously used to manufacture kitchens since the company was established. Bit by bit, the latest technological advancements have complemented the portfolio. Whether traditional or state-of-the-art – each material is crafted with a passion for detail and precision, as well as a high level of artisanship. It is this expert know-how in handling materials which lends each kitchen design its own specific aesthetics.  On display is a creative set-up of various materials and different steps in artisanship.

System in the Room

The idea of the add-on kitchen is revolutionary. The freestanding kitchen cupboard is divided into two: a row of base units, now connected with a continuous worktop, and a row of wall units, which hang on the wall above the top in a way never seen before. Poggenpohl presents this novelty, entitled form 1000, for the first time at the Cologne furniture trade fair. With the integration of appliances and the restyling of the design, the add-on kitchen becomes a fitted kitchen, the basis of all modern layouts today The ground-breaking further development of this design, the form 2000, is presented in Cologne in 1962.  To visually explain the flexible and novel planning principle provided by form 1000, Managing Director Walter Ludewig develops a modular set featuring various cabinet types in a model kitchen size. Thus begins the marketing of the add-on kitchen at the start of the 1950s. With this set in hand, Ludewig and the sales team from Poggenpohl travel to their retail partners and show them personally how to “furnish kitchens from wall to wall” (Anne Kitsch, Konsequenzen, 2007, p. 27).

Rethinking Ideas

In 1928, Poggenpohl presents the Reform Kitchen for the first time. The programme initially consists of a series of individual kitchen cupboards, and the focus is placed on the functionality of the furniture. By further developing technology and style, Poggenpohl establishes the modern kitchen – the principle of connected cabinets and functional interiors is found in the add-on and fitted kitchens to come. The Reform Kitchen is manufactured until 1950. The bow handle design, both functional and beautiful in its shape, featuring a transparent washer, is seen up to the 1960s, becoming the signature of the Poggenpohl kitchen.  An attractive and, at the same time, robust surface, the sanded-lacquer finish enjoys growing fame worldwide from 1930. The process, which was developed by Poggenpohl, is based on the enamel finish used at the time. Friedemir Poggenpohl and his head of the paint shop were inspired at the start of the previous decade by precious objects from China and Japan, which soldiers had brought back to Herford.

Centre of Life

Oriental temptation. The +MODO stand-alone gleams in dark emerald green. Like jewellery, meandering golden veins flow across the worktop made of Persian quartzite – its water-blasted surface surprisingly warm to the touch. Indirectly lit from below, the stone appears to float across the cabinets and distinctive pull-out shelves. The mystical tonality is echoed in the satiny-crafted fronts and drawers framed by dark oak.  The model on display features a worktop which can be pulled out thanks a vertical opening, which reveals the inside. With this view to future developments, Poggenpohl and Pensi Design Studio are once again touching on the topic of opening and closing, one of the essential design elements of +MODO.

Focus on Design

In 2006, Poggenpohl presents the company’s perhaps most ambitious vision of a kitchen at the Milan-based Eurocucina trade fair. During the development, the chief designer and his team focus on providing the answers to complex social and aesthetic questions centred round the kitchen space, in a way that can be experienced by all senses. The essential topics of living, cooking and communicating are reflected in each element of this three-part model.  Within the self-supporting construction of the Front Frame, appliances and drawers can be added, cupboards integrated and work surfaces as well as hobs built in. A transparent sink and soft handle straps complement the diversity, both in terms of look and feel. The media tree turns the kitchen into the high-tech centre of the study. Not seen is the Back Box. In the original design, this walk-in working space supplements the prestigious Front Frame by adding a professional kitchen with comprehensive functional areas – which can be hidden thanks to decorative folding doors. The Dining Desk is a slim dining and working table featuring a surprising interior which is revealed when the table is pulled out on the long axis. Tray, teppanyaki and roll container serve as an invitation to arrange and refine meals. Following an extremely positive response to the study, Poggenpohl adds the variable table to its portfolio in 2008.

Universal Aspiration

Focusing on ergonomic developments, Poggenpohl designs Ergoscale at the start of the 1990s. This electric measuring tool determines the height of the kitchen’s working surface – perfectly in harmony with the user’s personal body length. It is distinguished with an award in 1994 by Industrie Form Design Hannover, IF. The matching ergonomically designed furniture system Ergoline is included into the product portfolio in 1993. Here, the cooking area is lower than the worktop. At the same time, Poggenpohl offers yet another health-centric option with Ergolift, a bottom cabinet which can be adjusted up and down by 18 cm. In 1995, a new large corpus system, later to be named +MAXMORE, is presented. It offers two working heights. As a result, Poggenpohl is the first kitchen producer to provide ergonomic solutions in series manufacture.
